Delta Air Lines, Inc. is a major American airline, with its headquarters and largest hub at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Challenge
Delta was planning to use a cloud-based SharePoint solution for emergency preparedness HA/DR. Delta wanted their users to authenticate against their internal Active Directory and then seamlessly enter this SharePoint solution with their AD Authentication being passed.
What We Did
Security-based solutions are extremely challenging due to protracted testing and rollout and this project was no exception. Careful coordination with many stakeholders was required, and testing was carefully done in several phases. We utilized Microsoft's Gold partner support for architectural design review and to ensure that we were following best practices for this large implementation.
When this project was completed authentication could be accomplished by the following three methods:
- ADFS (Active Directory Federation Services), a software component developed by Microsoft that we installed on Windows Servers to provide users with single sign-on access to federated systems.
- Smartcard authentication
- PingFederate Identity Provider
The Result
Users now have a seamless single sign-on experience between their internal network and the cloud-based SharePoint solution. Management overhead is minimal as the only maintenance required is to update the security certificate every few years.
